A person was injured Monday in an officer-involving shooting at Alabama A&M.

The university has not identified the person shot but said the incident happened during a routine security check at the Knight Complex.

Police said the officer was in the complex when he heard shots fired below. When the officer made contact with the suspect in a stairwell, the two exchanged gunfire.

"This incident once again brought stress and uncertainty to our campus community," Alabama A&M said in a statement. "Today's climate continues to present safety challenges to colleges and universities, but AAMU is committed to enhancing overall safety for students, faculty and staff."

Authorities did not release information on the initial shooting or the motive behind it.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is taking over the investigation.

Counseling services are being offered to students and faculty.
