Alabama Democrats chair Randy Kelley has accused the Democratic National Committee (DNC) of engaging in “racial shenanigans” by appointing delegates to the party’s upcoming convention rather than allowing Alabama Democrats to elect their preferred delegate candidates.

Kelley said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, “The Alabama Democratic Party has been hijacked, undermined, and discriminated against by the Democratic National Committee.”

“I do not personally believe that President Biden knows about this,” he added. “You need to know that the Democrats at the national level did everything humanly possible to silence our voice in the Delegate Selection Process to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.”

The party’s national convention is scheduled for August 19-22.

“For your information, not a single Biden-Harris delegate, 'no not one,' was elected by the Democrats in the State of Alabama,” Kelley said. “All proposed delegates to the Democratic National Convention from Alabama were appointed. No other state in the nation had all delegates appointed taken out of the hands of the electorate and appointed by hands unknown. The illegal Delegates were appointed because those who appointed the false delegates did not want Blacks in Alabama to elect delegates of their choice. Since the black Democratic voting population in Alabama constitutes over 70% of the Democratic Party vote, it is clear the outcome of this action is to deny Black Democrats and the Black chairman of the Party an opportunity to elect delegates of their choice. If Alabama had a white chairman, this would have never happened.”

The DNC and Kelley have disagreed in recent years over the best path forward for the state party in red state Alabama.

“To make it clear, Democrats in Alabama were denied the right to vote for our Delegates in March in order to promote a false slate, handpicked by a few. This illegal appointment of Delegates by some people, most of whom do not live in Alabama, must be challenged,” Kelley said. “81 bonafide Biden candidates were disqualified from running as Delegates. We owe it to future Democrats, both Black and White, never to allow these racial shenanigans to happen again.”
