The Alabama Ethics Commission’s website was unusable on Tuesday for an unknown reason.

Multiple people got a “privacy error” warning when trying to reach the site on Tuesday that warned “attackers might be trying to steal your information from ethics.alabama.gov (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards).”

Site visitors on Tuesday were also warned, “You should not enter any sensitive information on this site (for example, passwords or credit cards), because it could be stolen by hackers.”

The commission and staff oversee and enforce the state’s ethics laws such as lobbyist registration and state employees and legislators’ financial disclosures.

An Alabama Ethics Commission staffer said around noon he didn’t know what caused the site to go down but the issue was being examined.

“I.T. is working on the website,” Byron Butler, executive assistant to the Alabama Ethics Commission director, told 1819 News.

Butler said he didn’t know when they’d know more about what caused the issue.
