The mother of a 13-year-old who died after being starved and dehydrated in a Birmingham hotel was found dead in Texas.
Serena Starkey, 53, of Birmingham, was charged with murder in the death of her son, Aston Starkey.
The teen was found malnourished and dehydrated on March 2 at the Extended Stay America on Cahaba Park Circle. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
After an investigation, Birmingham PD detectives and the Shelby County Department of Human Resources determined Starkey was responsible for the death due to neglect. However, she was nowhere to be found.
That changed on June 21 when she was found dead in another state. The Medical Examiner of the Southwestern Institute of Forensics Science in Dallas said there were no signs of foul play. The cause and manner of death have not been determined.
