The January unemployment rate in Alabama remained unchanged from December at 2.6%, and the labor force participation rate in January also remained unchanged at 56.7%, according to workforce statistics released by the Alabama Department of Labor on Monday.
Alabama's unemployment rate a year ago, in January 2022, was also 2.6%, and the labor force participation rate was 56.9%.
The U.S. unemployment rate for January 2023 is 3.4%, and the national labor force participation rate is 62.4%.
Counties with the lowest unemployment rates in January 2023 were Shelby County at 1.8%, Morgan County at 2%, and Marshall, Madison, Limestone and Cullman Counties at 2.1%.
Counties with the highest unemployment rates were Wilcox County at 8.8%, Clarke County at 5.9% and Dallas County at 5.4%.
Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates were Homewood at 1.6%, Madison at 1.7%, and Alabaster, Trussville, and Vestavia Hills at 1.8%.
Major cities with the highest unemployment rates were Selma at 6.4%, Prichard at 5.2% and Bessemer at 4.2%.
