The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) chairman spoke on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show” on Tuesday, saying while rain could prevent some from heading to the polls and he is concerned with voter turnout, he is also worried over possible crossover voting.
After years of discussion over crossover votes by Democrats to sabotage the Republican primaries, ALGOP chairman John Wahl said he is a fan of closed primaries.
“For me, securing the primary is a simple issue,” said Wahl. “This is a common-sense issue. Republicans should vote in the Republican primary; Democrats should vote Democrat. Period. We should not be allowing liberal, leftist, woke Democrats to be deciding our nominee.”
Among the districts, Wahl said the second congressional district is the least likely to see crossover voting because of the hefty race for that seat on the Democrat side.
Overall, Wahl said the rain may affect voter turnout, but he hopes the presidential primary will motivate people because they deserve to have their voices heard.
“I actually think we will see a little bit lower turnout in this primary,” Wahl said. “The presidential race is almost decided but I encourage people, if you have not voted, get out of and vote because by no means is this a final process. We saw that in D.C. just a few days ago where Nikki Haley beat Donald Trump with the delegates there.”
“So, there’s still a presidential race on the ballot,” he continued. “I hope that encourages people to get out and vote. But then also so many down-ballot races that you decide how your local and state government functions and it’s important that conservatives get out and let their voice be heard and cast their vote for their candidate of choice.”
The GOP doesn’t support particular candidates during primaries but does check for election integrity and security on Election Day.
