Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) chairman John Wahl recently teased a bill package aimed at reducing the tax burden on Alabamians, including another 1% reduction in the state’s grocery tax.
Wahl announced the proposed four-bill package on Wednesday, which ALGOP says will be dropped the same day with a mind for a swift passage.
According to ALGOP, the legislation targets immediate cuts to the state’s grocery tax, reducing taxes for seniors on fixed incomes, and increasing deductions for the state’s income tax. The total savings are estimated to equal $191.6 million upon final passage.
Hopes of additional tax cuts seemed dim when legislative leadership gave little hope of continuing the state’s overtime tax after a report by the Alabama Department of Revenue said the fiscal effect could be as much as $230 million.
“The Alabama Republican Party stands for lower taxes and fiscal responsibility, and we will continue to fight for hardworking Alabamians to have lower taxes,” Wahl said. “In these challenging times of rising inflation and increased costs, it’s critical that we take bold action to ensure Alabamians—especially families and retirees—receive the relief they need. Donald Trump is leading the line in Washington, and I want to see Alabama doing our part to provide citizens with needed tax relief right here at home.”
Lawmakers reduced the 4% sales tax rate on groceries by 1% in September 2023. However, an expected additional cut did not come the following year.
ALGOP touted lowering the state’s sales tax on groceries as one of its main priorities. Additionally, the party advocates for legislation allowing local governments to reduce or eliminate their portion of the grocery tax, ensuring even greater savings at the checkout line for Alabama households.
ALGOP also supports increasing the state’s tax exemption on withdrawals from retirement savings plans, alleviating financial pressures for those living on fixed incomes.
“These bills will continue the Republican Party’s record of lowering taxes in Alabama,” Wahl continued. “Since 2021, Republican leadership in the State Legislature has successfully passed approximately $1.4 billion in tax cuts. Our work isn’t done yet, though— I believe we must continue putting Alabama taxpayers first and ensure that our seniors, families, and businesses get to keep more of their own hard-earned money.”
