Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) chairman John Wahl slammed the planned Democrat protest at President Donald Trump's scheduled commencement address at the University of Alabama (UA) on Thursday.
Thursday's ceremony will celebrate the UA class of 2025 and feature an address from President Donald J. Trump, along with comments from UA president Stuart R. Bell and Nick Saban.
Not long after the announcement, Alabama's most vocal former U.S. Senator, Doug Jones, announced he would join former U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke and Alabama political newcomer Kyle Sweetser, who is vying for the seat of U.S. Sen, Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), in a "Tide Against Trump Rally" on Thursday.
The rally, which recommends business casual attire for a two-hour outdoor event in May, received no small share of mockery on social media. It also garnered "enhanced" security from UA officials.
In response, Wahl denounced the antics as a distraction from what should be a "once-in-a-lifetime moment" for UA graduates.
"It is unfortunate that some Democrats and liberal activist groups are attempting to turn a proud moment for Alabama into yet another political fight," Wahl said. "Donald Trump is the sitting President of the United States and our Commander in Chief. Whether you support him politically or not, this visit is an incredible honor for our state, the University of Alabama, and every student on campus."
He continued, "Free speech and open dialogue are fundamental to higher education and the values America was founded on. If we can't welcome the sitting president to speak to graduates without triggering outrage, then we have a serious problem in this country. I encourage every student, especially those who disagree, to come, listen, and be part of this moment. You don't have to agree with every word to understand the value of hearing different perspectives."
