An Asbury High School coach has been placed on administrative leave following allegations of an “inappropriate relationship” with a student.
Marshall County Schools issued a statement Friday about the incident, saying an Asbury staff member overheard two students discussing the alleged relationship on November 17. The coach's name has yet to be released.
“The staff member immediately contacted the Assistant Principal that evening and met with the AHS Principal and Assistant Principal the following morning. Reports indicate that school administrators subsequently met with the coach,” Wigley stated.
A month later, on December 17, Asurby Principal Clay Webber notified Deputy Superintendent Annie Spike of the situation after a report had been submitted to the Department of Human Resources, according to the school district's statement. When asked why it took over 30 days to report the incident to the deputy superintendent, the district told WAFF, "That's under investigation."
“Following an update from the Sheriff's Department, the Superintendent placed the coach on administrative leave pending further investigation. The Alabama State Department of Education was also notified the same day.
“There is no indication or suspicion of wrongdoing by any student at AHS. We will continue to protect the safety and integrity of every student within our school system.”
Marshall County Sheriff Phil Sims told 1819 News the investigation is still ongoing.
