The State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) is investigating the second officer-involved shooting in Athens in a month.

A 15-year-old was shot Saturday after police say he threw knives and pointed a rifle at them.

Police were called around 2:15 p.m. for an out-of-control teenager on Elles Drive. His family members told dispatchers he was threatening them. When they arrived, Police Chief Anthony Pressnell said the boy went into different rooms and threw knives at officers. When he pointed a rifle at them, one of the officers shot him. Only one round was fired inside the home.

Life-saving measures were taken to no avail, and the boy died.

Athens Police were also involved in a deadly shooting in May when a man fired his gun at officers. That shooting is also under investigation by SBI.
