GULF SHORES — The State Auditor race got a little hotter Monday as Andrew Sorrell qualified for re-election. Now, at least one of his opponents said all he can do is focus on his campaign.

"I can only focus on my race and what my message is to the people of Alabama and what we want to do," Derek Chen told 1819 News. "And that's something that I really look forward to is getting to continue traveling like I've been doing all across the state to make sure that we get our message out to the people of Alabama as much as we can."

Chen, who was previously running only against fellow Republican Josh Pendergrass, said he was not worried after hearing of Sorrell's decision to drop out of the Secretary of State race and join re-election efforts for State Auditor.

"I'm just going to stay focused on continuing to run our game plan," Chen added. "You know, our campaign has been wildly successful because we've really focused on the grassroots and getting to know as many people as possible and really connecting with them and making sure that we're hearing about their concerns and what they want to do with state government, and I'm going to continue doing just that."

Monday was the first day of qualifying. Primary elections will be on May 19.
