SPANISH FORT — Baldwin County Sheriff Huey "Hoss" Mack announced his last day as sheriff will be August 31. Mack is retiring and will become the executive director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association.

During the Eastern Shore Republican Women's (ESRW) evening meeting at The Original Oyster House in Spanish Fort, Mack was celebrated for his years in office.

Mack told the group that Baldwin County is fortunate to have many resources, unlike other counties in the state. In his new role, he said he hopes to unite all sheriffs.

The outgoing sheriff also highlighted challenges and accomplishments in Baldwin County and voiced his support for Donald Trump for president.

"Trump is so supportive of law enforcement," Mack said. "One of the opportunities that I have had in serving is I've been able to serve on the National Sheriffs Association, the executive committee. When President Trump was in office, he attended every meeting that we had in person. He's been the only president that has ever done that."

As for the attempted assassination of Trump, Mack said he is pleased that former Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle is no longer in her position.

"She should not have been given the opportunity to resign," he said. "I know a little bit about what goes on with these things. And I can just tell you why the Secret Service agents that were on the stage and that were there did an exceptional job. They did everything they were supposed to do. The failure in that was what we call the advance."

Mack recommended that Gov. Kay Ivey appoint chief deputy Anthony Lowery to the position of sheriff when he leaves. He said Lowery could complete several projects in progress before the next election in 2026.

Lowery, who Mack recommended the governor appoint to take his place, was at the meeting.

Baldwin County Commissioner Matt McKenzie was also at the meeting. McKenzie previously told 1819 News he wanted to be appointed sheriff.

The ESRW presented Mack with a resolution thanking him for his decades of service.
