The Department of Justice (DOJ) has appointed another district election officer to monitor Alabama's elections on November 5.

Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson announced last week an unnamed assistant U.S. attorney will serve as the district election officer for the Middle District of Alabama and "lead the efforts of his office in connection with the Justice Department's nationwide Election Day Program for the upcoming November 5, 2024, general election."

According to the DOJ, the DEO is responsible for overseeing the district's handling of election day complaints of voting rights concerns, threats of violence to election officials or staff, and election fraud, in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.

"Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election," Davidson said. "In addition, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence. The Department of Justice will always work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the election process."

The DOJ said they have an "important role in deterring and combatting discrimination and intimidation at the polls, threats of violence directed at election officials and poll workers, and election fraud. The Department will address these violations wherever they occur."

The DOJ also announced recently that Assistant U.S. Attorney John P. Hutchins, III will be the district election officer for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Alabama.

Northern District of Alabama Prim Escalona also announced recently that an unnamed assistant U.S. attorney was appointed as a district election officer for her office.
