A billboard on Interstate 20 near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is encouraging pregnant women to travel to other states for abortions.
The billboard encourages onlookers to visit ProAbort.com, where visitors are offered help with paying for an abortion and traveling to abortion clinics in states where abortion is legal.
ProAbort.com is sponsored by The Pink House Fund, a Mississippi-based nonprofit organization that works with abortion clinics and collects donations to pay for abortions and “continued education surrounding the stigma of abortion-related issues.”
Previously, the Pink House Fund focused on providing financial support for women at the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Mississippi abortion clinic at the center of the Dobbs v. Jackson case in 2022 that overturned Roe v. Wade and left the question of abortion’s legality to the states.
After the overturn, the fund began contributing financially to abortions around the country.
The organization’s billboard is located between Birmingham’s East Lake and Woodlawn neighborhoods, which are among the lowest-income areas in the city, facing away from the Kennedy Alternative School.
In response to the billboard, director of communications and public relations for the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham Donald Carson delivered the following statement:
“There always will be forces focused on leading us away from what is true and good. We must continue to work and pray for the conversion of minds and hearts so that all people will respect the dignity and value of human life, from conception to natural death. And in the meantime, we must continue to surround both mother and child with love and practical support.”
