Two billboards recently appeared in Birmingham criticizing Elon Musk and U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) over potential budget cuts to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
Under the new Trump administration, Musk has been leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which recently began scrutinizing the administration overhead of National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant research.
UAB is a large recipient of NIH research grants, recently receiving a $158,085 federal grant to study “vaginal health for transgender men on testosterone” and a $1.5 million grant to study transgender pain sensitivity.
UAB officials said on Monday the NIH spending cuts would “negatively impact jobs and economic growth.”

In response to DOGE's suggested spending cuts, a left-wing organization called Bright Blue Dots has recently placed billboards in Birmingham claiming Musk is “gutting B’Ham funds and jobs.”
