The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) recently received a $158,085 federal grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study “vaginal health for transgender men on testosterone.”

According to federal records, the NIH grant began in August and ends in July 2029. The grant is going to UAB Division of Infectious Diseases assistant professor Dr. Olivia Van Gerwen.

The grant aims to provide “Olivia Van Gerwen, MD, MPH with the necessary mentorship and career development to become an independent investigator whose work will contribute to decreasing sexual health disparities faced by transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations.”

“The focus of her research will be on the vaginal health of transgender men (TGM),” according to a summary of the grant.

The left-wing Human Rights Campaign Foundation has named UAB a leader in "LGBTQ healthcare equality” since 2018.
