Birmingham-Southern running back Jon Lewis is the lone underclassman selected as a semifinalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, which honors the most outstanding player in NCAA Division III.
Fifteen players are chosen as semifinalists, and 14 are seniors. Lewis is a 5-foot-10, 194-pound sophomore who is the country’s leading rusher in Division III. Lewis rushed for 1,558 yards on 222 carries with 17 touchdowns in 10 games. He set a school record with 341 yards and four touchdowns rushing in a win over Centre College.
A 40-member panel will vote on the award, with fan balloting accounting for the 42nd ballot. Fans can vote on D3football.com through Dec. 3. Five finalists will be announced on Dec. 7.
