Birmingham’s ABC 33/40 News ended its evening broadcast on Thursday by paying homage to the Muslim Brotherhood.

After concluding a story on Transportation Security Administration donations, California native Ashonti Ford signed off for the evening with a quote she attributed to the Brotherhood’s founder.

"Before we go, a quote from the founder of the Islamic Brotherhood: The quieter you become, the more you're able to hear."

The quote has been ascribed to multiple sources, including the 13th-century Sufi poet Rumi and the American spiritual leader and guru Ram Dass.

However, Hassan al-Banna is credited with founding the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928 in Egypt.

Ford's comments contrast with the efforts of Republican leaders shedding light on the dangers of Sharia law.

In November 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order designating chapters of the Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations. In January, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control followed suit “to curtail the pernicious influence of the Muslim Brotherhood and protect the United States and its partners from Muslim Brotherhood chapters’ support for terrorism.”

ABC 33/40 is a subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group.
