HUNTSVILLE — Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jared Hudson addressed the perceived threat of Sharia law in America at the Rocket City Young Republicans' monthly meeting on Thursday evening.
Hudson, a former Navy SEAL, described the controversial belief system as one that "teaches tyranny" at the cost of individual rights.
"It's basically the interpretation of the Quran and how Muslims follow the Quran," explained Hudson. "So let's look at two sides of it, you have one, death to the infidel, which is convert or die. Or convert or pay a tax. That's the softer side of it. It's not that the ideology of the Quran changes. It's that the person chooses to negate or chooses to exercise the ideology that the Quran teaches, which is not the rights of the individual."
He added, "That's the biggest thing about Sharia law. It does not teach the rights of the individual. It teaches tyranny. That is how Islam is run. It's run through tyranny."
According to Hudson, America and its Constitution are the "antithesis" of Sharia law.
"In the United States of America, our Constitution is based on Judeo-Christian values. Our Constitution outlines the rights of the individual, and it starts with the First Amendment, with your right to worship and believe how you want and the freedom of speech," Hudson said. "So you can't take somebody's ability away to believe what they want to believe. A Muslim wants to be a Muslim. That's perfectly fine. They can be a Muslim in the United States of America."
The veteran offered his solution to curbing the spread of Sharia law and its impact on American society.
"But what we have to do is make sure that we codify the one document that has codified the protections for us," suggested Hudson. "The First Amendment, the Second Amendment, our Bill of Rights, our Constitution, is not a permissive permission slip from the government. It's a line in the sand that says, 'Government, you cannot overstep this. God has already given us those rights.' The Constitution codifies it."
He added, "I believe the easiest way to protect us, especially federally, from issues like Sharia law taking over, is to codify legislation that protects the US Constitution."
