A Semmes business owner shot five times by police believes police unlawfully entered his property.
Fox 10 reported that attorneys for Johnny Bowman, Jr. said their client is committed to seeking accountability and preventing a recurrence.
Bowman was in a camper inside Bowman’s Auto Air on January 4 when Semmes Police, who were investigating a possible burglary, confronted him. According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, officers entering the building saw someone moving inside a camper. Officers said they announced their presence, and the owner opened the door and began shooting. Police returned fire, striking the man.
An officer was grazed in the lower back by a bullet.
Bowman is accused of barricading himself in the camper for two hours following the gunfire. He eventually surrendered and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The case has been sent to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.
Meanwhile, Bowman is still hospitalized, but his attorneys, Bryan Comer and Lacey Smith, stated, “All citizens are entitled to the right to be free from unlawful entry into their home or business and to be protected from police misconduct. Johnny is committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable and to doing what he can to prevent this from happening to other law-abiding citizens in the future.”
