As the Alabama legislative session winds down in Montgomery, lawmakers are hoping some of the bills that didn’t pass this year will be on the board for 2027.
State Rep Jennifer Fidler (R-Silverhill) talked about her breast reconstruction bill on FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show.” The bill would help women undergoing breast reconstruction after cancer get insurance coverage more quickly and with more options. Breast cancer survivors often give up on reconstruction or travel out of state to receive the type of reconstruction they are comfortable with or can afford.
While change is needed, Fidler said she was told that it could be a couple of years before Alabama is ready to pass the bill.
“I think at the end of the day, I mean, we've got the major players going, ‘Yes, we know there's an issue. Yes, Alabama needs to stand up and do something,” Fidler said. “How we do that, you know, how exactly all that comes together, I guess, is the thing we've got to make sure we get together to make sure it's right because we know that these options and this access is federal law. I mean, we should be doing it. There should be access for women for any type of reconstruction they want and it's just not here in this state.”
Fidler said she has also been working with insurance companies and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. She said it is important to complete the work on time to ensure Alabama gets the bill ready.
