U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) said there were a lot of inaccuracies surrounding her secret ballot vote for Senate majority leader on Wednesday.
In a Thursday appearance on "Alabama News with JT," Britt said she wanted to listen to "closing arguments" from U.S. Sens. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), John Cornyn (R-Texas) and John Thune (R-S.D.) before making a decision. She maintained that she cast her initial vote for Scott despite there being "multiple lists that are inaccurate" floating around.
"I told all of my colleagues, and this time, obviously, was my first time to really be a part of it where these are my colleagues, that I would listen to them," Britt explained. "I felt like that's the due diligence that I needed to do for the American people, for the people of Alabama. And so over the two weeks, obviously, the months leading up to it, watching, listening, what they're saying, my biggest thing was I wanted change."
"I wanted to know how they would be different in the current leadership," she continued. "And for me, ultimately, that came down to Rick Scott. And moving, though, into the vote, I met with each candidate two times. There was also some rumor out there that I hadn't even met with Rick Scott, which was funny because I had just gotten off the phone with him yet again."
Online speculation that Britt didn't vote for Scott began after Thune won with 29 votes over Cornyn's 24 votes.
Scott retweeted Britt’s statement about her vote.
“Thank you, @SenKatieBritt! Let’s get President Trump’s agenda done!” he posted on X.
Britt continued her push for Lara Trump to be appointed to fill U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio's (R-Fla.) seat after Rubio joins the Trump administration as Secretary of State.
"You think about the job that she [Lara Trump] did at the RNC, creating a big tent for us to ensure that voices were heard from all across the country and all walks of life in the Republican party," said Britt. "I mean, she helped usher in the biggest landslide that I have seen in my lifetime. She made sure that we secured the vote. In addition to getting the vote out, she made sure that we secured it. And you think about how important that is and how much time and energy she had to put into that."
"Additionally, she is a mom of school-aged kids," she added. "And I always say this, we need more of those voices at the table. I was proud to be the very first one out of the gate saying we need Laura Trump."
