On Wednesday, the Mo Brooks for Senate campaign attacked GOP rival Katie Britt for an ad attacking Brooks. The Brooks campaign called the ad another “dishonest attack ad” by the Katie Britt for Senate campaign.
Britt’s attack ad states:
“The Afghan disaster. Our enemies emboldened. But even before that debacle, Mo Brooks voted to make us weaker. Repeatedly voting against bills funding our military. Mo Brooks voted with Nancy Pelosi, and against every Alabama Republican, to cut off funding to fight ISIS. He even voted to cut off funding to fight the Taliban. Mo Brooks, voting with the Democrats, and against America's military.”
The Brooks campaign responded, “Mo Brooks’ Election Record. Congressman Mo Brooks has been elected 14 times in a part of Alabama that has 40,000+ defense jobs: uniformed military personnel, Department of Defense civilian workers, and defense contractors and workers. Think about it. There is no chance Mo Brooks would have ever been elected if any of Britt’s claims were truthful.”
In voting against going to war in Syria the Brooks campaign claimed, “Obama sent America’s military into Syria and Iraq without Congressional approval. Obama should have sought prior approval (under the War Powers Act or U.S. Constitution) before once again sending our military personnel into harms’ way without Congressional support. Mo Brooks voted accordingly.
“Mo Brooks disagrees with those who say America should be the police cop on every corner of the planet and must fight every war everywhere, with little or no support from the rest of the free world,” the Brooks campaign continued in their statement. “Mo Brooks’ position is that, if it is a fight worth fighting, then the rest of the world should pony up in a significant way. America should not always be the only free world nation that is primarily responsible for spending its treasury and risking its citizens’ lives without substantial support from the rest of the free world.
“Mo Brooks, like President Trump, opposes Never-Ending Wars – particularly in places around the globe (like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, etc.) where the people we fight to protect do not appreciate our sacrifices and, after everything is said and done, still hate Americans and America,” Brooks' campaign said. “As such, Mo Brooks consistently urged America to leave Afghanistan after our military victory was achieved (culminating with the killing of Usama Bin Laden in 2011). America’s military kills enemies, not nation-state building.”
The campaign claimed that “Brooks has an excellent “strong national defense” rating by third parties unrelated to Britt or Brooks’ campaigns.”
The Brooks campaign pointed to a number of high ratings that he received:
The American Conservative Union grades Mo Brooks an overall “A” on “liberty, personal responsibility, traditional values, and a strong national defense”
Heritage Action for America grades Mo Brooks in the Top 10 of all Congressmen on “principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.”
Brooks also slammed Britt and Durant for saying they would have voted for the Democratic version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Brooks did vote for the bipartisan compromise NDAA after the Senate demanded changes to the NDAA that passed the House.
“Both Britt and Durant say they would have voted for Pelosi’s NDAA,” the Brooks campaign stated. “If Democrats can so easily out-maneuver Britt and Durant to surrender on teenage daughters being drafted, anti-gun Red Flag laws, and military personnel vaccine mandates, why should any Alabama citizen believe their campaign promises on border security, deficit and debt, moral values, or anything else? America already has too many weak-kneed RINOs in Congress. America can’t afford any more.”
Lillie Boddie, Katie Britt, Mo Brooks, Mike Durant, Karla DuPriest, and Jake Schafer are all running for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate on May 24.
