The Alabama Association of School Resource Officers (TAASRO) announced the death of an SRO Tuesday.
Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office deputy Tim Johns was working at Brookwood High School when he collapsed. The incident happened during bus dismissal at the end of the day.
"After many efforts by EMS at the school and hospital, Deputy Johns could not be revived," TAASRO stated. "Deputy Johns served the Brookwood area schools as a School Resource Officer. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Johns' family."
Johns was a beloved figure on campus and was the grand marshal of the school's homecoming parade last week.
"It is always heartbreaking to lose someone who dedicated so much of their life to serving the community," the Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Office stated. "Deputy Tim Johns' passing is a great loss, not only to his colleagues at the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office but also to the students and staff at Brookwood High School, where he served as a school resource officer."
"With 26 years of service, he clearly left a lasting impact on those around him," the office continued. "Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire community as they navigate this difficult time. His legacy of service and kindness will be remembered."
The 62-year-old was set to retire next month.
