Former U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) and Austin Sidwell were the first to qualify with the Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) to run in the Congressional District 1 special election. The election will be held on August 11.
According to results posted by the Alabama Secretary of State's office, Carl won 32,650 votes, or 40%, while Sidwell received 5,812, or 7%, in the ghost primary on May 19th.
Earlier this month, the Alabama Legislature laid the groundwork for a special primary election following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais. Governor Kay Ivey issued a proclamation calling special elections in Alabama's first, second, sixth, and seventh districts for August 11, with partisan qualifying beginning Wednesday and ending Friday.
The Secretary of State's office issued a calendar for the election.
No Democrats have qualified to run in the Congressional District 1 yet, according to the Alabama Democratic Party qualifying page.
A full list of qualified Republican candidates for the four special elections can be found on the ALGOP website.
