The Alabama State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire in Jefferson County after a child was killed early Monday and three others were injured.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Forestdale Fire responded to the 2200 block of Cedar Crest Drive around 1:15 a.m.

A seven-year-old boy was trapped inside the burning home, so firefighters worked their way inside and removed the child. However, it was too late. The child was taken to UAB Hospital, where he later died.

The sheriff's office said the child's older brother, a 16-year-old, was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Authorities believe the older brother tried to save the boy, and that's how he was injured.

A five-year-old girl, the brothers' little sister, was also hurt and taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

"The children were at home with their grandmother when the fire occurred," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "She was transported to UAB Hospital and treated for her injuries and has since been released."

Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.
