A city-funded HBCU Classic party turned deadly in downtown Montgomery on Saturday night.
The event was sponsored by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Montgomery and featured a Ferris wheel supported as a "pilot program" by Mayor Steven Reed. The three-day temporary Ferris wheel cost the city $67,500, according to WAKA.
The shootout happened at the corner of Bibb and Commerce Street at 11:30 p.m. The City of Montgomery hosted and funded the HBCU Classic, which included free beer on Friday and a Ferris wheel downtown.
MGM City Events said in a promotion for the event, "Kick off an exciting weekend in Montgomery with the MGM On Tap Biergarten on Friday, Oct. 3 from 5-11 pm — a lively celebration right in the heart of downtown! We're bringing the energy to Lower Dexter Avenue with the Alabev truck parked near the iconic fountain, serving up FREE beer straight from the keg all evening long!"
"Come hungry! Food trucks and local vendors will be circling the fountain with mouthwatering bites and signature drinks representing each of our HBCU teams playing in town this weekend. Enjoy live performances by Trew the Star and Sol Xpressions, plus beats by DJ Fresh to keep the party going with music, dancing, and street vibes you won't want to miss. And stick around for a special surprise artist at 9:00 pm that will finish the night off strong," MGM Events said. "This event is just the beginning! Part two of the night continues at the Ferris Wheels and Thrills activation site, featuring another DJ, additional food trucks, and high-energy fun that runs all three nights, October 2–4. Don't forget to snap a pic with the giant MGM letters displayed at Rotary Park — perfect for your weekend memories. Tag your friends in the comments that you want to bring with you to this amazing evening in downtown Montgomery."
