The City of Montgomery is blocking the release of public information about the Office of Violence Prevention.

According to emails obtained by 1819 News recently, a Montgomery resident submitted an open records request in November for a list of employees, salaries, overtime pay, job descriptions, and contracts related to the Office of Violence Prevention.

Randy Weaver, record retention manager for the City of Montgomery, said in an email response last week to the citizen who requested the information that he could not release it because he was directed “not to provide the information from an executive staff member.”

“Up to this point, our office has been directed not to provide the information from an executive staff member. Until that decision is changed or (overridden) by another authority. I cannot release the information,” Weaver said in an email obtained by 1819 News.

Alabama’s Open Records Act generally requires state and local agencies to respond within 15 to 45 business days of acknowledging receipt of an open records request.

The City of Montgomery has paid $220,143.04 in overtime to employees of the Office of Violence Prevention since 2022.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed launched the Office of Violence Prevention in December 2021.
