Alabama voters passed a statewide amendment allowing judges to deny bail for shooting or discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling or other occupied space, or for any solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder. The amendment is an expansion of Aniah’s Law.
With 17% of precincts reporting, the Associated Press called the amendment a 79% win.
Blanchard's mother, Angela Haley-Harris, pushed for voters to pass the measure to "protect children and strengthen communities."
Under Aniah’s Law, judges may also deny bond for a list of offenses, including murder, kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, terrorism, robbery, domestic violence, aggravated child abuse, arson and human trafficking.
Defendants arrested are afforded an Aniah's Law hearing, during which a judge hears arguments.
