On June 24, 2022, the landscape of abortion policy in the United States changed forever. The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, allowing states to set their own laws on abortion.

The 6-3 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization was praised by conservatives and misconstrued by others who misrepresented its meaning. Now, four years later, lawmakers continue to celebrate the decision.

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) said the SCOTUS ruling righted a wrong from 1973.

“Four years ago, the Supreme Court rightly recognized that the Constitution does not contain the right to abortion,” Palmer said. “The Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson corrected a constitutional overreach and returned the issue of abortion to the American people and their elected representatives. While countless unborn lives have been saved since then, our work is not finished,” said Palmer. “Every child is a gift, and we must continue advancing policies that protect the unborn, support mothers and families, and uphold the dignity and value of human life.”

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) celebrated the anniversary by highlighting her work on the MOMS Act, which provides resources for mothers.

“The Dobbs Decision was never the end of the conversation, it was the beginning of a renewed commitment to supporting moms and families,” Britt said. “Recently, I had the opportunity to discuss my MOMS Act and the Trump Administration's launch of http://MOMS.gov. Every woman deserves the support she needs throughout her pregnancy journey and I will continue advancing policies that empower moms, strengthen families, and help welcome more children into the world.”

U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville), who praised SCOTUS in 2022 for moving “back in the direction of the Founding Fathers,” said he will continue to push to protect the unborn.

“Today is the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court's Dobbs Decision, a landmark decision in the effort to protect the most vulnerable among us and guarantee their right to life and liberty,” Aderholt stated. “I remain committed to defending the sanctity of life, protecting the unborn, and ensuring a safer future for our nation's children.”

While Dobbs v. Jackson prevented a federal ban on abortion, many Democrats view the ruling as an attack on women’s rights.

U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) vowed to fight to restore Roe v. Wade.

“Four years ago today, Trump's right-wing Supreme Court majority overturned Roe v. Wade and stripped away a right that generations of women had relied upon,” Sewell stated. “Since then, states like Alabama have enacted some of the most extreme restrictions on reproductive health care, putting politicians between patients and their doctors. While Republicans continue their attacks on reproductive freedom, I'm fighting alongside Democrats to restore Roe's protections, defend access to contraception and IVF, and ensure every woman can make her own health care decisions.”
