Cullman City Councilman and local businessman Clint Hollingsworth is the most recent candidate to throw his hat in the ring for the newly vacant seat in Alabama's House District 12 (HD12) with an official Monday announcement.

The HD12 seat became vacant last month after then-State Rep. Corey Harbison (R-Good Hope) announced his resignation, stating he wished to stay closer to home to be with his family.

"I am running for the Alabama House of Representatives because I believe our community deserves an experienced leader who will fight to get us a seat at the table," Hollingsworth said. "I am excited about the opportunity to make a difference in Cullman County and will do this through teamwork, open communication, transparency, and building consensus. I'm ready to get to work and fight for District 12."

Hollingsworth is currently serving his fourth term on the Cullman City Council. He also owns D-1 Motor Cars, a local vehicle dealership.

"As a small business owner, I understand the challenges our families and businesses face," Hollingsworth continued. "I know what it's like to juggle family and work while worrying about making ends meet. I'm running for State Representative to ensure that our district has a strong, conservative voice in the legislature and that we work to create solutions to improve the lives of all Cullman County residents."

Last week, Gov. Kay Ivey set the special primary election for July 15. If needed, a special primary runoff is on August 12. The special general election is on October 28.

In his campaign announcement, Hollingsworth pledged to address issues with a "common-sense, conservative approach," saying he believes in learning as much as he can about an issue and listening to his constituents' concerns before making a decision.

"I commit to serve the people of Cullman County with integrity and be a strong conservative voice in Montgomery," Hollingsworth concluded. "I care deeply for this community and will always put the needs of my constituents first."

Hollingsworth is a graduate of Cullman High School. He attended Wallace State Community College and earned a bachelor's degree from Athens State University. He and his wife Leslie have five children, one of whom they lost in 2007.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story inaccurately claimed Hollingsworth was the first GOP candidate to announce for the seat.
