The man charged in a string of murders across Birmingham, including the Five Points South mass shooting, is now charged with three more murders.
Damien McDaniel, who is currently incarcerated with the Alabama Department of Corrections on a probation revocation, is accused in the shooting deaths of Birmingham firefighter Jordan Melton, UPS employee Anthony Love, Jr. and 21-year-old Mia Nickson.
Melton and another firefighter, Jamal Jones, were shot in July of 2023 at Station 9. They were both taken to the hospital. Jones survived and Melton died five days later. At the time, police said the shooting was likely targeted.
Nickson was shot and killed at her home. Love was shot while walking to his car after work. Charles Nance, of Pinson, is also charged with capital murder in Love's death.
Interim Birmingham Police chief Michael Pickett said Tuesday there are still several other murders McDaniel could be connected to. However, he said the investigations are more complex because several cases are murder-for-hire.
“The Birmingham Police Department is unwavering in our commitment to solving all homicide cases,” Pickett said. “While some of these investigations may require more time, rest assured that we are tirelessly working every day towards bringing perpetrators to justice with efficiency and meticulous work carried out by our homicide detectives and the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.”
Melton is now the suspect in 14 homicides. The newest charges are two counts of capital murder, intentional murder and attempted murder.
Melton is being held at Kilby Correctional Facility with no bond.
