The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 24-year-old inmate found dead in his cell.

D’Koleman Juvan Harris, of Bessemer, was found unresponsive at the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer on Sunday at around 8:15 a.m. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates said the nature of the death has not been determined. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.

According to court documents, Harris was arrested in April for attempting to elude. He was released on bond in May but was re-arrested and his bond was revoked for failure to appear in court in June.

Harris was granted bond just three days before his death after the case was waived to a grand jury. However, he died before he could be released.
