Democrats and liberal leaning media outlets across the country are casting the fatal shooting of three men at a San Diego mosque as a hate crime perpetrated by neo-Nazis, despite both shooters being of Hispanic descent, with one now suspected of identifying as transgender.
According to Newsmax, Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Velasquez, 18, killed the individuals, including a security guard, at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday before committing suicide in a vehicle near the site of the shooting. Cain and Velasquez were allegedly in a romantic relationship.
Hours after the incident, Democratic candidate for Alabama's Congressional District 5 and self-proclaimed Antifa member Jeremy Devito expressed little awareness of the situation, demanding a federal hate crime investigation.
"Violence like this is becoming an ever-increasing threat here because of the absolute racist and bigoted language that both current and hopeful Republican leaders are actively using and encouraging," Devito wrote in a social media post. "This is why I demand that the DOJ do indeed investigate this as a hate crime."
He added, "We must signal, in every instance, especially now, that we are still willing to hold people accountable for the most serious of crimes. And by doing that in San Diego, I think our Muslim friends here in Huntsville might be able to sleep a little easier one day soon."
Devito is running today in the Democratic primary for CD-5. Should he win, Devito will face U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) in the general election in November.
