State Rep. Barbara Drummond (D-Mobile) says if she's elected mayor of Mobile, she intends to prioritize limiting the lawful Second Amendment rights of Alabamians, pledging to repeal the state's open carry law, as well as create additional gun-free zones in public areas.
In a statement posted to her Facebook page in response to a recent shooting at a dance recital at Mobile's Saenger Theatre, Drummond said, "Ultimately, the problem is guns in the wrong hands and wrong places. If elected mayor, I will spearhead an effort by cities to demand the legislature repeal the open carry act and empower municipalities to ban guns in public areas."
Speaking on behalf of BamaCarry, Taylor Rhodes told 1819 News, "Barbara Drummond is using a tragedy to push a radical, anti-gun agenda that targets the rights of peaceable Alabamians. Her plan to repeal open carry and create gun-free zones isn’t about safety; it’s about Democrat control."
Rhodes added, "Gun-free zones are soft targets that embolden criminals, not stop them. Stripping citizens of their ability to defend themselves in public places is not ‘common sense’—it’s evil, reckless, and dangerous. BamaCarry will fight tooth and nail to ensure her Bloomberg-backed gun control fantasies never see the light of day in Alabama. We don’t need more restrictions on gun owners, we need politicians who understand and respect the Constitution."
Alabama law currently allows residents to open carry and carry without a permit in public areas with specific exemptions under state and federal law.
