Shomari Figures, a Democrat, defeated Caroleene Dobson, a Republican, in Tuesday's only competitive congressional race in Alabama.
Figures will represent Alabama’s second congressional district, which was redrawn by a federal court last year in an ongoing redistricting lawsuit by left-wing groups.
According to the Associated Press, Figures won over Dobson by a 54.5% to 45.5% margin, or 156,622 to 130,568 votes with 98% of votes reported.
“This experience has been one of the most rewarding in my life and I know that I will cherish the friendships that I’ve made along the way that will last a lifetime," Dobson said after conceding the race on Tuesday night.
She added, "More importantly, we need more citizen servants who run not because they want to make Washington their career but because they’re dedicated to serve others and working towards a better day for all Alabamians."
