Late last week, the State opened the comment period for the "Draft 2025 Comprehensive School Counseling and Guidance Model for Alabama Public Schools (The Alabama Model)." The 50-page document "is designed to help schools establish school counseling and guidance programs that enable students to become successful in the areas of academic development, career development, and foundational wellness."
This is the first update since the publication of a 90-page model that was adopted in 2003.
The State Department of Education wrote, in a press release, that it is seeking "To engage the general public, parents, educators, business, industry, and civic leaders in a general review. Input is highly regarded and valued as we seek to maintain the highest level of rigor and challenge for all students in Alabama's public schools."
"The draft contains the model for comprehensive school counseling and guidance programs in Alabama public schools as well as standards specifying what students in Alabama should know and be able to do because of their participation in school counseling and guidance programs. The review is an opportunity to offer feedback related to each standard for each grade level, as well as the recommended framework for schools to model their school counseling and guidance programs," the report states.
The model identifies all the stakeholders that the DOE says can benefit from the program, including students, parents/guardians, teachers, instructional leaders, school counselors, student services personnel, and local boards of education.
It says, "Beyond the school setting, it serves as an important resource to communities, business and industry, postsecondary institutions, and counselor educators."

To receive public input, the survey and a copy of the draft will be available on the ALSDE website and will be posted from Friday, October 10, through 5 p.m., Monday, November 10. Comments can be submitted using a Google Form set up for responses.
