A University of Alabama doctoral student detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday was a national security concern, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Alireza Doroudi, a mechanical engineering doctoral student from Iran, was arrested by ICE agents at 5 a.m. at his home Tuesday.
“ICE HSI made this arrest in accordance with the State Department’s revocation of Doroudi’s student visa,” a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security told CBS 42 in a written statement on Thursday. “This individual posed significant national security concerns.”
The spokesperson didn’t elaborate on why Doroudi was a national security concern, according to CBS 42.
An employee at the Pickens County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to the outlet that Doroudi was being held at its jail until ICE officers pick him up and take him to a different location. The employee told the outlet Doroudi had been at the Pickens County Jail since Tuesday night.
