From accusations of sexual assault to being the second coming of Adolf Hitler, perhaps no politician has been so unfairly maligned and misunderstood as former President Donald Trump, according to author and documentarian Dinesh D’Souza.

In his newest film, “Vindicating Trump,” D’Souza argues why the former and potentially future president is America's best option and how his positives far outweigh the negatives.

“The argument of the film … is quite simple. We need to rehabilitate our own understanding of Trump because this guy with his package of qualities is perfectly suited,” D’Souza said on a recent episode of “1819 News: The Podcast.” “He's not just the best guy, he's maybe the only guy for the crisis in which the country finds itself now.”

D’Souza explained how Trump’s enemies, many of which used to be his friends before he entered politics, have been systemically tearing down him and his reputation.

“Character assassination comes first, and then comes, you can call it political assassination. This was the Russia collusion, the effort to frame him as a Russian asset,” D’Souza said. “Then you have legal assassination. Why? Because it's all these cases, 91 criminal charges, like a shotgun of charges, aimed at locking this guy up for life, which would be a kind of a death sentence.

“Finally, actual assassination attempts, of which there have now been clearly two, arguably three. This is insane. I mean, we've seen nothing like this in American history, and you have to ask, why Trump?.. Something about Trump that makes him a very scary guy to the regime," he added.

D’Souza said by simply telling the story of who Trump really is, his film will motivate Trump supporters and those on the fence to vote in November.

“I want to fire up, motivate and inspire the Trump supporters,” he said. “I want to give second thoughts to any Republicans or moderates who have anxiety about Trump. I want to make the case that this guy is a man of magnificent virtues and virtues that really override his vices. His vices are really minor.”

D'Souza is the creator of eight feature documentaries, including "Hillary's America," "2000 Mules," "Police State" and "Death of a Nation."
