New sealant on a concrete floor caused two workers and several animals at Dog Days of Birmingham to have breathing difficulties Monday. Firefighters rescued dogs from the roof using ladder trucks after the building had to be evacuated.

Thirteen large dogs that had been moved to a rooftop play area to escape the fumes had to be rescued from the roof. Smaller dogs were kept on the ground floor and could be taken out the front door safely. In all, 26 animals were removed from the facility and have since been reunited with their owners.

Five dogs had to be taken to the veterinarian as a precaution. Four people inside the building are reportedly doing well.

The fumes will have to be cleared from the building before operations at Dog Days can resume.
