A Mississippi-based company called Kids First Education is the top donor to a political action committee (PAC) promoting the passage of a huge property tax increase for Tuscaloosa City Schools.
Tuscaloosa voters will decide in an election on Tuesday whether to raise their ad valorem tax rates by 11.5 mills or $345 annually for a property with an appraised value of $300,000.

Kids First Education gave Secure the Future PAC $12,000 on August 23. The Tuscaloosa City Board of Education approved a contract with the company in January for “teacher effectiveness with job-embedded coaching for ACT and core subjects at Southview, Skyland, Central & Woodland Forrest Elementary Schools, Westlawn Middle School, Central and Paul W. Bryant High Schools to provide collaboration with the Tuscaloosa City District team to create personalized plans for teachers and students for 394 days at a cost of up to $581,150.”
The board approved another consulting contract with Kids First Education for $295,000 on September 10.
