A 27-year-old mother is expected to survive after being shot five times in the chest, back, arm and midsection.

Cait Schott was in her Shellbrook Pointe apartment Sunday evening when Brian Medley, 60, kicked in the front door and “unloaded his gun on Cait,” the family said.

Her young son, Ollie, was with her and was not hurt.

“Ollie saw everything and begged the shooter for his mother’s life as she was pushing him under the bed, shielding him from the gunfire,” Schott’s mother, Allyson Marshall, stated. “I can't imagine what he’s going to be dealing with emotionally. He's suffered a trauma no child should ever see or experience.”

Marshall said one bullet went through her liver. She was flown to USA Trauma Center in Mobile, where she underwent surgery to repair her liver. She has since had another surgery to repair her arm.

While doctors expect several more surgeries in the future, Schott’s family is thankful she survived.

“Cait is tough, and her will to survive for her son is very strong,” Marshall said. “She will pull through this.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help the single mother pay for medical and living expenses as she continues to recover.

Medley was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The family says Medley and Schott worked together, and he was trying to be in a relationship with her.
