Despite wide publicity on social media and local TV, the anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protest planned outside Church of the Highlands appeared to only attract a few demonstrators Sunday morning.
The protest was organized by leftist groups Birmingham Indivisible and Alabama 50501 to oppose the recent detention of suspected illegal alien Giovanna Martinez in Leeds.
“Join us outside Church of the Highlands (Grants Mill Rd) to protest the detainment of Giovanna Hernandez,” read the event page on Facebook, to which only four people responded.
1819 News asked Indivisible on Facebook why they chose to protest at Highlands, to which they responded, "I don't know why this church, but I'll try to find out."
ABC 33/40 posted an article on Saturday promoting the event, but it was quickly removed that afternoon.
The Facebook page “Unidos con Gio” shared a video of the protest, claiming the group gathered near the Grant Mills Road exit instead of by the church, as was advertised.
