Gulf Shores Police Officer Darren Baker was honored with Officer of the Month for March 2024 after police said he went above and beyond while responding to a shooting outside Surf Style on March 27.
Baker was the first on the scene after shots rang out, sending people scrambling near the intersection of Highway 59 and Beach Boulevard. As people ran from the scene, Baker ran towards the scene, locating the victim.
“During his response, he made contact with the victim and relayed developing information to responding officers,” police said in a statement. “Officer Baker displayed tremendous composure and professionalism during the incident.”
The victim, a juvenile, was transported to the hospital for injuries and survived the incident.
Police said Baker has been proactive in keeping the beach safe.
“For the month of March, he led D Squad with 210 calls for service, 188 self- initiated calls, and 58 total vehicle stops,” the department continued.
The alleged shooter and another person were taken into custody in connection to the shooting.
