The Foley City Council approved a move Monday to discontinue the collection of sales tax on hearing aids.

The move comes after Mayor Ralph Hellmich said city officials were approached after the Alabama legislature passed a law exempting hearing aids from state sales tax.

The state law and Foley’s local exemption will become effective October 1 and sunset on Sept. 30, 2029.

State Rep. Margie Wilcox (R-Mobile), who sponsored House Bill 51, requested municipal and county governments to follow suit. Madison was the first city in the state to pass an ordinance omitting local sales tax on hearing aids.

The removal of the state sales tax on hearing aids will cost the state's Educational Fund around $3.1 million a year.
