Alabama House Democrats called for a repeal of the state’s sales tax on groceries on Monday.
Alabama has the fourth-highest state and local combined sales tax rate in the nation in 2023, according to a recent analysis by the Tax Foundation.
Multiple Governors and legislators in states throughout the country are aiming to reduce or eliminate their state’s sales tax on groceries, according to a recent article in Pew Charitable Trusts.
The decision came after weeks of negotiations between Marshall County Schools officials and the mayors of Albertville, Boaz, Guntersville and Arab to devise an alternative plan.
A study released by the Tax Foundation last month on states’ business tax climates shows “which states are serious about competing for labor and capital,” according to a recent editorial by the Wall Street Journal.
