When Coach Joe Kennedy knelt on the football field after a game to thank the Lord, he had no idea that this simple act of faith would lead to a legal battle that would change the course of our nation. Coach Kennedy’s extraordinary life story is now being told in the newly released movie, “Average Joe,” which opened last week in theaters.
Joe Kennedy’s life began with significant challenges. As a troubled youth, he was frequently in and out of foster homes and often found himself in trouble with the law. Seeking a new path, he joined the Marines and had a successful career. After retiring, he became an assistant coach for his hometown high school football team in Washington State. It was here that his story truly began.
Before officially accepting the coaching position, Joe made a personal commitment to the Lord: after every game, he would kneel at the 50-yard line to praise the Lord for his team and thank Him for the opportunity to coach. This prayer was a private act between him and the Lord, never intended to involve others. However, over time, students, parents, and community members asked to join him, to which he responded, “It’s a free country.”
After eight years of praying at the 50-yard line, the trouble began when a coach from an opposing team objected to Joe’s post-game prayers. This led to Joe being fired from his job. With the support of First Liberty, Joe fought back in the courts. Despite losing multiple cases, he persisted, appealing each decision until his case reached the U.S. Supreme Court. On June 27, 2022, after seven long years, Coach Joe Kennedy was vindicated with a Supreme Court victory. This landmark case overturned 50 years of religious oppression in the U.S., allowing public displays of religious objects in public places, such as the Ten Commandments and crosses and nativity scenes on government property.
We are honored to announce that Coach Joe Kennedy will be the keynote speaker at our 2024 banquet on Tuesday, October 29, at the Marriott in Birmingham. This event is a unique opportunity to hear more about Joe’s journey and the newly restored religious liberties we can now enjoy. The banquet promises to be an upbeat, patriotic celebration. Funds raised will support our vital work to protect and cultivate families in Alabama. Tickets are tax-deductible and can be purchased here.
