HOMEWOOD — After a brief lightning delay, the City of Homewood’s Independence Day festival began. Four candidates set up booths, meeting residents while passing out fans, brochures, and American flags. There were bubbles and glow sticks as well.
Current City Councilwoman Jennifer Andress, who is running for mayor, was at the event with her husband and supporters. As were council hopefuls, JJ Thomas, who is challenging Nick Sims for Ward 2, with a prime location just outside the fair-like rides.
Chris Lane, one of the candidates for Ward 3, the only candidate in that crowded field in attendance, and Tiffany McIntyre, candidate for Ward 1, were also on hand, greeting and talking to residents.

Former State Representative, Homewood resident, Paul DeMarco, was at the event and told 1819 News, “The upcoming municipal elections are around the corner, and it's great to see these candidates come out to meet the voters on the 4th of July.”
“Those running for mayor and city council need to hear the importance of citizens’ priorities, such as public safety, fiscal responsibility, and support of the local school system," Demarco said, stressing the importance of elected officials to make themselves available to hear directly from their constituents.
There was a strong police presence, as the city remains alert following a recent officer-involved shooting; there were no incidents during the event.
The event culminated in the annual Thunder on the Mountain fireworks show launched from Vulcan.
