In a wide-ranging interview with Yellowhammer News' Riley McArdle, six-term U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) revealed he will seek another term in 2026.

Palmer told McArdle his reasoning had to do with an unprecedented "opportunity" the Trump presidency offers.

"I am going to run again if you want to know because I think that this is an opportunity that rarely comes around in history," Palmer said to Yellowhammer News. "You've never had a president that has gone through what he has. He's had four years to stand on the sideline and realize what needed to be done, and we have this window to get these things done."

During the 2014 special election to fill the unexpired term of former U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Vestavia Hills), Palmer pledged a self-imposed five-term term limit. He acknowledged in 2023 that his 2024 reelection bid contradicted the pledge but maintained that was what he felt he was called to do.

Despite this contradiction, Palmer won the Republican primary with over 80% of the vote in a newly drawn sixth congressional district in Alabama.

However, after the 2024 election, Palmer lost his reelection bid for House Republican Policy Committee chairman to U.S. Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.).

He told McArdle he was committed to serving the remainder of Trump's presidency.
