Richard D. Brackner announced on Thursday that he will seek election to the Alabama House of Representatives representing House District 95 as a Democrat.

The seat is an open seat following the retirement of Steve McMillan (R) and presents an opportunity for Democrats to pick up a seat in the House on the Baldwin County Gulf Coast.

Brackner lives in Gulf Shores where he is employed in the hospitality industry at Kiva Dunes Beach Club. He has qualified and will run in the 2022 Alabama Democratic primary.

“For too long, career politicians have kept the state of Alabama at the rear of the pack,” Brackner said in a statement. “Alabama trails behind neighboring states in far too many quality-of-life categories. The Gulf Coast needs true representation in Montgomery, not power-hungry politicians only seeking office for personal accolades.”

Brackner said that he wants “to give the people of District 95 a voice in Montgomery and build bridges to a better future for his home state.”

“Alabama is in dire need of sensible policies across the board that will strengthen our education system, promote job growth, protect our environment, and secure a prosperous future for all our citizens,” Brackner said.

Some important things Brackner said he wants to address include COVID-19 recovery, healthcare access for all, and improving infrastructure.

"Alabama can no longer afford to kick the can down the road," said Brackner.

Brackner has a bachelor’s degree in advertising from the University of Alabama and is a native of Oxford.

The Democratic primary is May 24.
